5 questions to ask before accepting an internship

When applying for internships, it is easy to get caught up in the job title and status of the company. We are all guilty of wanting to work for a company that we either know, admire or has a good reputation. Although you want to be proud of where you work, it is important to look further into a job role, especially internships, to make sure you fully understand what you’re applying for.

The best internships are designed to help young professionals make connections within the industry, build their skill set, grow confidence and give an insight into the industry they wish to work in. All internships and work experience should offer this but the quality of the experience can vary. In order to give yourself the best experience possible you should ask yourself and the company a few questions before accepting the role.

Will this company offer me mentorship? - Will the manager or person you report to, guide you through the role, not only giving you responsibilities to further your skill set, but do you sense they will give you valuable advice and be a future connection in the industry?

Will there be opportunity to progress after the internship? - A successful way to obtain a job upon leaving university is to return to the company you interned for. Does the company have a track record of keeping on hard working interns? Was mention made of this during interview? Will there be opportunity to stay on as a permanent employee?

Will the role be diverse? - We have all heard about the internships that ask you to make tea/coffee and do the printing. Whilst we all recognise this can be a feature of anyone’s work, permanent or otherwise, this type of work experience won't help you develop or grow. Be very specific in asking what the job involves. Will you get the chance to experience all aspects of the department you’re working for?

Will you be challenging yourself? - Will the internship push you outside of your comfort zone? Will there be opportunities to work on specific projects, do presentations to the team, work away from the office at events?

Will you have progress reviews? - Will your manager review your progress in the company? This is important when considering your personal growth and understanding areas that need improvement.

Without considering these questions for yourself or to the hiring manager, you’re allowing yourself to go into an internship in the dark. Whilst it’s a relief to gain an internship, particularly after a long stint of applications, the wrong internship will make you unhappy and miserable. It is important to understand fully what the company and internship can offer you, and the better informed you are will mean knowing if it’s right for you.
